The National Weight Control Registry is a long-term American study which has followed people who have successfully lost weight, and maintained their weight loss (the study requires people to have lost at least 30 pounds - 2 stone 2 pounds - and to have maintained a loss of at least this at 1 year).

Six key actions have been identified from this study that may help long-term weight maintenance:

  1. High levels of physical activity (approximately 1 hour per day of moderate intensity activity)
  2. Eating a diet low in calories and fat
  3. Eating breakfast
  4. Weighing self regularly
  5. Having a regular eating pattern
  6. Catching slips before they turn into larger regains of weight
